(Back cover of the book)
A plain and poor Mennonite chicken farmer, Phares Rutt, emerges from a WW2 farm deferment and strikes out on his own to craft well-made pieces of wood furniture. With a full shop and no buyers, he picked up various side jobs and supplemented his family’s income by returning to work on his brother’s chicken farm.
One day, an acquaintance from his local church approached him with an idea to perfect his product. After much trial and error, Phares was able to create beautiful furniture and his business took off.
In just a few years, what began as a one man show grew under Phares’s leadership to be a company that employed 175 people and produced beautiful custom wood kitchens for a network of dealers up and down the east coast.
Follow the journey that Phares and his wife Edna take as they raise their family of six alongside a growing business.
Take a peek inside the Rutt family story that continued long after the business was sold and how author Wanda Stauffer, granddaughter to Phares and Edna, traces her family history with a connection to Rutt Kitchens far beyond 1969.
