Stone Stories

Have you ever been caught between a rock and a hard place?

An incident is recorded in the Bible that found Joshua and the whole nation of Israel caught between a flooded river in front of them and the reality of wandering in the desert behind them.

They crossed the Jordan river during the harvest season. I don’t know much about the Jordan River, but the Bible states that at that time, the river was at flood stage during harvest.

The priests were carrying the ark of the covenant which held the stone tablets of the 10 commandments. When they stepped into the water’s edge, the water stopped running from upstream. The water heaped on a pile upstream and was cut off downstream.

The priests stood in the center of the dry river bed, with the ark of the covenant, while the whole nation of Israel crossed over on dry ground. When everyone was safely across, Joshua told each of the twelve men to pick up a stone from the center of the dry river bed and bring it over to the side they crossed to.

Joshua set those 12 stones up as a memorial to remember the miracle that occurred that day. The account is recorded in the book of Joshua, chapters 3 and 4. I encourage you to read it.

Joshua told the Israelites, “In the future when your children ask you, “What do these stones mean?” tell them.

Tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord.

”He is saying: Remember!

Don’t forget what God has done!

Tell your children!

God met them between a rock and a hard place.God has done that for me too. He has met me in difficult situations. He has taken care of me when I was alone. He has given me peace when I was afraid. He has comforted me when I was grieving.

He is still living and active. I realize that it is so easy to forget the stories of God’s provision for us and his work in our lives. Not only is it easy to forget, it is easy to minimize exactly how incredible those stories really are.

I have determined that I need to tell my Stone Stories to my children.

What about you? Your own, “It’s-no-big-deal” stories and your “Why would anyone want to hear about MY stories?” may actually be a big faith-building deal for someone else. We have to realize that these aren’t just OUR stories! These are GOD’S stories! He wrote them through our lives.

Please share them with your children or those who are close to you.
